When people think of donating to a cause, especially on the heels of a natural disaster, the last thing they want to hear is that their hard-earned money didn’t reach the intended charitable cause they were hoping to support. This is definitely sad. Worse yet, this actually happens, even to institutions such as the American Red Cross. What if, thanks to blockchain, this problem would forever go away and the process for allocating funds was more efficient? It can be.
The use of blockchain, an immutable digital ledger of transactions, could be used to securely send donations and track the origins of products like water, produce, and canned goods to certify the safe use of items sent from credible 3rd parties. In fact, this is something already being seen from The World Food Programme which is now using blockchain to promote food security via its “Building Blocks” initiative. Clearly there is room for this type of initiative to make its way Stateside considering the upturn in natural disasters seen in various U.S. geographic areas in recent years.
